VICENTE POVEDA Y JUAN

(Petrell, Alicante, 20th of february of 1857-1935)

The artistic panorama in Valencia during the second half of the XIX century and first years of the XX century was particularly rich and promising for the new generations of painters, who focused mainly on the traditional painting that had deep roots in the traditions of the genre. Vicente Poveda y Juan was one of those who contributed to the renewal of the genre in the Spanish land, especially after having got scholarship of the Valencia Provincial Deputation for the continuation of his studies in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, where he had protection and guidance of Federico de Madrazo. From Madrid he sent to the Deputation, as a proof of his progress in studies, a copy of  Francisco Pradilla’s famous canvas Mad Juana Next to the Coffin of Felipe the Handsome, that is kept by the Museum of Prado, dating back to 1880. The following year Poveda y Juan took part in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. In 1884 he was awarded a medal of third class for the Valley of Tears, honour that was repeated in 1887 for the Death of Prince of Viana. His talent was recognized not only in our country, with many exhibitions in the Circle of Fine Arts and various contributions to those organized by the gilder Hernández, but also in 1895 he staged an individual exhibition in Berlin, and in 1904 he participated in the exhibition of Fine Arts in Rome with Praying Cardinal.
