LUIS FEITO
(Madrid, 1929)
Under the common denominator of abstraction, he was part of the founder group El Paso together with Saura, Millares, Canogar, Viola, Rivera or Chirino. Abstract structures full of matter, with strong contrasts between white, black or red, are the key aspects of his painting, filled with a constant dialogue between textures, lights and colour range. With an outstanding international course, in places so distant as Paris, Montreal or New York, his painting has different stages: graphism, stains, geometry with an aspiration to synthesize, in a personal language, expression and balance.

After a period of training in the Academy of San Fernando and some flings in the cubist aesthetics, he holds two individual exhibitions in well-known bookshops, Buchholz and Fernando Fe. Then he travels to Paris, where he finds the abstract painting of Poliakoff, Fautrier, Hartung or Rothko among others, which become his main references.
In 1957 he was one of the founders of the El Paso group, together with Saura, Millares y Canogar and the writers José Ayllón and Manuel Conde. Very soon Manuel Rivera, Manuel Viola and the sculptor Martín Chirino joined them. Among the achievements of the group stand out the study and practice in the vanguard currents of the Spanish art - informalism and abstract impressionism.
The works of Luis Feito of this time contain the influence of automatism, where outstand surfaces realized in oil and sand in monochromatic scale colours, such as black, white and ochre. In 1962 a new colour appears in his paintings - red, used with dexterity in circular forms. In the end of this decade, the leading part in his geometrical structures is played by the white. He was awarded prizes in numerous occasions. In the biennale exhibition of Venice in 1960 he won a David Bright prize, the international critic overflowed with his works, and from then, the course of his career changes completely.
