JUAN USLÉ

(1954)

Juan Uslé took his first lessons in Fine Arts at the High School of Fine Arts of Valencia. He started exhibiting in a variety of galleries of Madrid, although very promptly he opened his own gallery, where he often displayed his works of expressionist colours.

Lines on Wood, 1994

In 1980 he receives a grant of the Ministry of Culture for Young Artists. Two years later he takes part in the show that the Caixa de Pensions of Barcelona dedicates to the most prominent contemporary young artists. After several successful exhibitions Juan Uslé, tired of the artistic circle of Spain, decides to move to New York. In 1992 he participates in the Documenta exhibition in Kassel and his name soundes with a new force in Spain.

The 1st of May in Lund, 1993

The art magazine Pensil repeatedlynames him one of the progressive Spanish artists. Four years later The Institute of Modern Art in Valencia dedicates to him a retrospective exposition under the title Back & Forth.

Juan Uslé is considered an artist of the expressionist abstraction. Many of his works demonstrate predominance of space and colour where compositions turn into simple structures full of lyricism. Stands out the disposition in lines and a way of splitting colours by using aqueous technique.
