This artist and poet is originally from Santander but he moved from his native town to Madrid in order to study in the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando. His first and the most famous artistic works were completed in the recently inaugurated Salons of Independent Artists of the El Heraldo in Madrid.
The first one was held on the 30th of November and on the 10th of December 1929 with the participation of the large group of young artists: Arronte, Rafael Botí, Díaz Caneja, Isaías Díaz, López-Obrero, Ponce de León, Servando del Pilar, and Pablo Zelaya. It was created with the purpose to show a new art in the capital and a choice of the European imaginary tendency in the art that had been made.
A year later there was the second and the last exposition of the Independent Artists, opened from the first till the 15th October. Alongside with others there were Enrique Climent, Francisco Mateos, Navarro Ramón, Ontañón, Santiago Pelegrín, Puyol, and Rodríguez Luna.
The next Juan José Cobo Barquera’s participation was in a new association of painters and sculptors created in March 1932 and called Artists in Action, members of which were Arronte, Juan Borrás, Ferer, Florit, Gil, and Waldo Insúa, not to mention others. Two months later he took part in the National Exposition of Fine Arts.
When the civil war is over he continues to paint and starts the other activity of his, that of a writer, and in 1951 his monograph on Maria Blanchard’s painting comes out.
