JOAN BRULL VINYOLES

(1863-1912)

Joan Brull was born in Barcelona in 1863, and there he went to School of Fine Arts as a talented pupil. Influenced by the realism of his teacher Simón Gómez y Polo, he painted The King Wamba’s Taking of Monastic Vows, exhibited in the Parès Hall of the Earl City in 1883. He went later to Paris and continued his education with Raphael Cöllin during five years; his work was progressing from the early realism to the  fin de siècle idealism under the influence of the new teacher, although he was still interested in the historical painting, day-to-day scenes and portraits, he was especially good at infantile portraits. There were numerous collective exhibitions in Madrid and Barcelona, as well as abroad, in Paris and London. In national exhibitions in Madrid he was awarded medals in 1892, 1895, 1897 and 1899, and decorations in those which took place in Barcelona in 1894, 1896, 1898, 1907 and 1911. He got Medal of the Third Category in the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1900 and Commander of the Order of Alfonso XII in 1904. He participated as a temporary art critic in the magazine Joventut.
