He was born in a family of a jeweller where he learned the craft. Very soon he enrolled into the School of Fine Arts de la Lonja in Barcelona. He went to Paris in 1900 together with his family and returned only on rare occasions to that Cataluña of the beginning of the century. In Paris he was in the most important artistic circles of the city, he met Picasso, Gargallo, and Brancusi, to mention just a few. On his return in 1910 he began to work with masks of the stamped metal, although it was a line marked by Rodin and it was continued by Bourdelle and Maillol. The sculpture of the first ten years is characterized by the naturalistic and symbolic features united with a new conception of the human body oriented more towards the smplification of volumes and the reduction of lines.
He started taking part in salons of Autumn, the National Society of Fine Arts of Paris and the Independent. In 1920 he opened his own workshop of the metal forging. Two years later he succeeded in staging his first individual exhibition in the Gallery Povolovsky of Paris and the following year he did it in the Gallery Chameleon where he demonstrated paintings, pictures, jewellery, sculptures, and relief in metal.
In the late twenties he began to mold his first iron sculptures; he collaborated with Picasso in the realization of metal sculptures and exhibited various iron works which belonged to the chategory of sculptures and not to the decorative art in the Salon of Autumn.
The thirties were marked by the approximation to the members of the group Cercle et Carré and Abstraction Création thathad a strong influence on his art. His work became more abstract and the first space constructions appeared.
fter a long list of participations in the individual and collective exhibitions just like the exhibition of the Spanish Art in the Museum of Jeu de Paume (1936) or the exhibition of the Pabellón of Spain of the Universal Exhibition in Paris (1937) and the beginning of the second world war his production is regarded as a consequence of the lack of the iron in a new material, the gypsum and the drawing on the military topic. In 1942 he passed away after a heart attack at the age of 62.
